ilyAIMY, Phil and the Flying Leap

ilyAIMY, Phil and the Flying Leap
ilyAIMY  - For nearly two decades as ilyAIMY (i love you And I Miss You), Rob Hinkal and Heather Aubrey Lloyd have played everything from bait shops to biker weeks to clothing-optional resorts nationwide. They engage audiences with humor and award-winning narrative songs that pair an unforgettably soulful and powerful female vocalist with a percussive, clawhammer-like guitarist. Their infectious energy and rapid-fire lyricism is softened with cello and lush harmony, making ilyAIMY "a welcome jolt" and "an acoustically roiling, combustible attack on the usual singer/songwriter fare," say reviewers. Their energetic brand of new folk earned honors from Kerrville NewFolk, the National Association for Campus Activities, the Northeast and Southeast Regional Folk Alliances and the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival. They are repeat Washington Area Music Association Winners for Best Contemporary Folk Group.

“[ilyAIMY is] part of the folk community & play acoustic folk instruments but ilyAIMY is really a rock band… You feel you are in the midst of a primeval jungle with dangerous creatures hiding behind every tree. Everything is irregular, filled with syncopation & dissonance… This is not lack of craft… but an essential part of the music; it creates tension & excitement.” – Wise Madness (NY) Gordon Nash

"ilyAIMY ain't your grandpa's folk music… fearless writers & performers… Voices this rich & emotionally hard-hitting - equal parts velvet darkness, barely contained heartbreak, & hard-won, unstoppable joy - don't come around often.” – Pat Wictor

“…a style that’s very much their own; influences from indigenous tunes along with dark and edgy folk numbers, the band ultimately provides [an]interesting in-your-face blend of rock through whatever direction they choose” – Declan Poehler | Frederick News-Post

"ilyAIMY... is eclectic... imagine if you will the R&B section of Earth Wind and Fire teamed up with the folk sensibilities of Steeleye Span and you will have ilyAIMY" - Vance Gilbert

Phil and the Flying Leap twists and re-imagines music across multiple genres of classic American
song spanning Vaudeville to Nashville to Somerville and everywhere in-between.

Songwriter Phil Berman's melodies and lyrics usher the Great American Songbook into the 21st
century, while lush arrangements and virtuosic musicianship from violinist Rachel Panitch and
bassist Forrest Pettengill offer vibrant live performances full of heart, joy, and rich vocals.

The group released their debut album Play the Part in 2021. The 13-track LP wrestles with
questions of work, worth, purpose, and the heart in the age of the Great Resignation, weaving
together folk, jazz, musical theater, rock, and French chanson.

The record features 24 of Boston's best musicians with orchestral arrangements by Brandon
Wilkins, mixed by Noah Georgeson (Natalia LaFourcade, Joanna Newsom, The Strokes).
