Ukulele Workshop: Intermediate Ukulele with Amy Kucharik

Ukulele Workshop: Intermediate Ukulele with Amy Kucharik
Continuing Ukulele with Amy Kucharik
5 Mondays starting Oct. 19, 6-7pm on Zoom (Oct. 19, 26, Nov. 2, 9, 16).

Limited to 10 signups

WORKSHOP DETAILS:
Once you’ve mastered some basic chords and you’re comfortable with strumming up and down, what comes next? This continuing ukulele series gives “Beginnermediate” students a next step for learning more music on the friendly, portable uke. We’ll cover some concepts that will help you build on your basics and progress to the next level, including techniques for stronger chording, strumming, and singing, and ideas for making your playing more fun and exciting!

Stronger barre chords and tackling the “E” chord: By now, you’ve probably played a few barre chords. In this session, we’ll cover some ways to make them more comfortable feeling and better sounding. We’ll also look at a few alternatives for that pesky “E” chord… And what about Ab?
Singing and playing: Not everyone is a born singer, and that’s OK. But singing while you play is one of the great joys of playing ukulele. In this session, learn some essential breathing and ear training exercises to boost your singing confidence. We’ll also figure out how to make any song fit your vocal range, and learn various ways to transpose songs.
How to know which strum pattern to use: We’ll review some useful strums (and maybe learn some new ones). We’ll inspect the “feel” of various pieces of music to unravel the mystery of which strum patterns to use

Fancy strumming and muting: We’ll experiment with some fun techniques, such as palm muting, which you can use to give songs a funk or reggae sound.
Intros, embellishments, and doodads: The missing piece for rhythm ukulele players who sing is often what to do for song intros or when there’s space for an instrumental solo. We’ll cover some quick and dirty fingerpicking and other enhancements you can use to make a song sound more exciting.

REQUIREMENTS:
This workshop series is intended for intermediate ukulele students who are comfortable with basic chords (C, G, G7, Am, F, E7, D7, Dm, etc.). Barre chord knowledge is helpful but not required. You should also be comfortable with strumming up and down; some familiarity with the Calypso strum is recommended. You should have your own ukulele tuned GCEA and a Zoom account with a stable Internet connection. A laptop or tablet is preferable to a phone; Zoom setup tips will be emailed prior to the first class.
